It's good to talk
In a recent hypnotherapy session, a client told me how helpful she thought it was, to be able to talk about and share her thoughts and feelings with an objective and trained therapist who didn't know her previously. Sometimes we can be too close to a situation to be able to see the wood for the trees and hypnotherapy allows us to slow down a little, take a step backwards and start to see an issue or a situation from a new angle. As I was asking her some questions about the issue she had come to see me about, the process of formulating her answers helped her to put things into more perspective. Quite quickly she was identifying choices in terms of actions she could take going forwards, that she hadn't thought of previously. By the end of the session, which included a relaxing and enjoyable hypnosis and learning a few self-help techniques, she left with a smile and a collection of useful resources that she can use now and well into the future if necessary.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
I recently attended an interesting webinar on PTSD run by Andy Workman and organised by the Association for Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy (APHP).
Andy started the session by reminding us about our three different brains that developed successively during evolution:
a) The reptilian brain includes the brainstem and the cerebellum and they control the body's vital functions such as heart rate, breathing, body temperature and balance. We don't have to think about these things as we just respond automatically.
b) The limbic brain emerged in the first mammals, and later in humans became responsible for our emotions and responses. The main structures of the limbic brain are the hippocampus, the amygdala and the hypothalmus. The limbic brain is the seat of the value judgments that we make, often unconsciously, that influence our behaviour.
c) The neocortex brain in humans with its two large cerebral hemispheres, is vital to our more sophisticated, rational and intelligent brain that makes logical sense of the world and helps us with things like language, abstract thought and learning.
Andy went on to describe in detail the processes that happen in the body and the brain when someone experiences a traumatic or stressful event and how we will typically respond to that trauma.
After experiencing such an event, if we are able to talk it through and allow our logical and rational brain to make sense of it and process the situation successfully, then after a while, it becomes "normal" and we're able to cope with life afterwards fairly well.
However, if we're not able to talk it through, we may well develop problems. If we haven't been able to rationalise the memory, then we can experience flashbacks and irrational and ingrained responses to a range of triggers, even when these are only vaguely similar to the original event. Even when we are no longer in danger, our brain stays on high alert and continues to send out stress signals, which lead to PTSD symptoms.
Interestingly, it is not just the trauma survivors who can suffer from PTSD, but also their partners, families and friends, other witnesses and members of the emergency services.
There are several treatments that can help survivors process their memories and feelings about traumatic events and teach them how to manage their fears and build coping skills. These include psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) and cognitive behavioural treatments.
Learning more about PTSD can be beneficial to help you identify the actions you can take to help yourself, or for someone close to you who may be suffering from PTSD, in addition to getting professional help.

Bowel Cancer Screening
NHS England’s new ‘Bowel Cancer Screening’ campaign has launched recently. This latest phase of NHS England’s ‘Help Us, Help You’ campaign is designed to encourage people who are sent the NHS bowel cancer screening home test kit to complete and return it. The campaign launched on Monday 20th February and runs until 31st March 2023. It is supported by Cancer Research UK.
Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK. Yet the latest data shows that almost one third of people who were sent an NHS bowel cancer screening kit in England last year did not go on to complete it. Early diagnosis is vital, as detecting bowel cancer at the earliest stage makes you up to 9 times more likely to be successfully treated.
The campaign aims to increase the number of people returning a completed bowel cancer screening test by raising awareness that it can detect signs of cancer before they notice anything wrong and addressing the main barriers preventing people from completing the test.
Campaign activity is targeting people aged 56 to 74, to align with the age of eligibility for being sent a home test kit. The campaign will also focus on those from lower socio-economic groups and ethnic minorities as these groups have been shown to be less likely to complete the screening kit.

Talk to residents at Great Alne Park
I started seeing clients at the Medical Centre, Great Alne Park (GAP), near Alcester back in November 2022, which is going very well. I was invited recently, along with several other practitioners to join Dr Wallis and his son Tom Wallis, to talk to a meeting of the GAP residents. I shared with them a bit about myself, what hypnotherapy can do for people and how they can get in touch with me, for further information or to make an appointment. After the talks, the residents followed us over to the Medical Centre, had a tour of the various treatment rooms and were able to chat to us informally.

Do you have the warning signs of a drinking problem?
You may have found it hard to control your drinking and felt pressure from friends, family or colleagues to consume lots of alcohol at celebrations such as Christmas and New Year.
Or you may realise that you have seen drinking as a way to de-stress and let off steam for some time now. But it can become a crutch. If we drink too much we may do something that we regret and/or we may suffer serious consequences as a result.
If you have concerns about your own drinking, it makes sense to find out the facts about how alcohol affects the body, the serious long term health issues and learn some techniques to reduce your alcohol intake. For help to identify the reasons behind your drinking and deal with the cravings, please get in touch with me on jo.hand@btinternet.com or phone 07941 610811.

National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) peer group
In 2014, I helped to set up an NCH peer group, which covers the Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Birmingham area. We are a group of hypnotherapists and other related practitioners, who meet regularly to share good practice, recommend resources and provide support to each other. We arrange interesting speakers and have discussions on a wide range of issues. In the early days, the meetings were held face to face in Birmingham and then in 2020 when Covid came along, we moved our meetings online using Zoom. The group members all agree that it is helpful and enjoyable to be able to share our thoughts and ideas with colleagues. No matter who we are, or how experienced we are, we can always learn something new from others. If you are a therapist and you would like to know more about our peer group, please get in touch with me.

I would like to offer my respects and thanks to Queen Elizabeth II who passed away recently. Launch of the Orange Button scheme
This month sees the launch of the Orange Button scheme in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. This scheme offers signposting and support to people with suicidal thoughts or anyone concerned about someone who might be.
The Orange Button is worn by people who have relevant training in mental health and suicide prevention and many of these people will be working in voluntary and community organisations providing public services and in workplaces including health and care workers and non-NHS workers.
Orange Button wearers are there to listen, signpost to local services and help reduce stigma around suicide.
Anyone across Herefordshire and Worcestershire who has had at least 3 hours suicide prevention training (or mental health training with suicide prevention content) over the past two years is being asked to consider becoming an Orange Button wearer.
Anyone who wants to get involved can apply for an orange buttons via the "Now We’re Talking" website at www.healthyminds.whct.nhs.uk/nwt-suicideprevention
And remember, anyone struggling to cope with mental health issues can call the NHS Urgent Mental Health Helpline on 0808 196 9127, which is available 24/7.

Hypnotherapy can help YOU take control
This week I attended a business networking meeting at Evesham United Football Club. It is useful to meet and chat to people from other businesses in the area. In addition to everyone introducing themselves, I was asked to give a short talk and the 2 main thoughts I shared with the attendees were as follows:
a) During hypnosis you remain totally in control. Clinical hypnosis doesn't mean that I take over your mind or make you walk around the room like a chicken. Hypnosis is a very relaxing and enjoyable experience and has the added bonus of helping you to achieve a positive change. So it is a win win win situation.
b) We all have mental health, as well as physical health which goes up and down at different times in our lives. Hypnotherapy is a talking therapy which uses hypnosis as a tool to help you deal with a particular issue that is causing you some concern. So when you have hypnotherapy, far from giving up control, or being overpowered in some way, you learn that you are more in control of your life than you may have realised. Hypnotherapy can provide the tools to help YOU take control.

Getting back to nature
During the last couple of years, many people have rediscovered the therapeutic benefits of walking regularly and I am certainly one of them. Whether it is a short walk round the block, or walking the dog, or a longer walk following a public footpath with the aim of achieving a certain number of steps per day, it doesn't really matter. Just getting outside and being in nature can lift our spirits and make us feel more energised and happier. Learning about the flowers, trees and shrubs which are all around us and seeing and hearing a range of birds and animals can be quite awe inspiring. I find that walking can be a great way to focus on being in the present and switching off from other concerns. Here are a few photos I have taken recently.

In 1987 the Member States of the World Health Organisation (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and diseases it causes. World No Tobacco Day is celebrated on May 31st every year. The annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness of the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form. Nelson Mandela the South African antiapartheid revolutionary and the first president of South Africa (1918-2013) said "It always seems impossible until it's done."
Both of these quotes remind me how important it can be for us to work on our motivation and to clarify exactly what we want in life.

Menopause issues
Today (Tuesday 8th March) is International Women's Day and I believe that it's vital that women feel empowered and able to make informed decisions about their health.
One important health issue that affects women is their experience of menopause and perimenopause. This is a normal transitional time in a woman's life, often between the ages of about 45 and 55. However, it can sometimes be misunderstood by women themselves, by their work colleagues, partners or family members.
There are a number of lifestyle, movement and diet issues that can benefit women, as well as learning techniques to relax and to make use of the mind to help themselves to make this a more peaceful and contented time.
So if you, or someone you know would like to learn more about the menopause, the range of possible symptoms, treatment options and how hypnotherapy can help, please get in touch.

No Smoking Day on Wednesday 9th March
Tomorrow is No Smoking Day in the UK. Did you know that hypnotherapy is also a great tool to help you, when you decide to give up a smoking habit once and for all? I have worked with several clients recently on this issue and it is great to see the smile on a client's face when they tell themselves at the end of the session that they are now a natural non-smoker.

The Dalai Lama once said "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." What he meant by this is that the secret to becoming happy doesn't just lie within yourself, but in your connections and interactions with other people.

Happy 2022
I hope that you had a good Christmas and New Year. I wonder if you set yourself some new year's resolutions and if you did, how you are getting on with them as we approach the end of January?
It can be difficult to keep on track when other life challenges come along and get in the way. Working towards achieving a target or an objective that we set ourselves, can be hard sometimes, especially when we are working on it alone.
If you have something that you want to achieve, or change for the better in your life, why not make a hypnotherapy appointment? I would be happy to work with you to help you to achieve your desired change or outcome, that will improve your health, wellbeing and happiness for the future. If you are interested please get in touch at jo.hand@btinternet.com or 07941 610811

Seeing clients face to face again
Now that the government has relaxed the Plan B Covid-19 rules, I am delighted to say that I will resume seeing clients face to face at Evesham Natural Health Centre from Tuesday 1st February 2022. I will also continue to provide sessions using Zoom software, as an alternative option for those who would prefer to work online.

I would like to share some quotes by Oprah Winfrey this time. She said "Cheers to a new year and another chance to get it right." She also said "You get in life what you have the courage to ask for" and "The greatest discovery of all is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude."

The client has to want to be there
When I see a hypnotherapy client for the first time, I offer them a short, free introduction session in which I explain briefly what hypnotherapy and hypnosis are (and what they are not), I answer a few FAQs and I give them a chance to ask me any questions they may have. By doing this, it helps the client start to relax, to understand how the sessions will work and to decide if this is the right therapy for them.
It is really important that the hypnotherapy client wants to be there and has not come to see me simply because someone else has told them to come, such as a parent or a partner. I explain that I will do all that I can to help and facilitate them, but it is actually the client who is responsible for making the positive change that they want to achieve in their life. After the introduction, we usually move into the first session proper, provided that the client is happy to do so.

NCH conference held on 25th September 2021
This year's conference run by the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) took place online, using a platform called Airmeet. It was an amazing experience. Delegates could choose which 5 speakers to watch live on the day and in addition, they could watch the other 8 speakers afterwards via the video recordings of the sessions. In between the speaker sessions, we were able to do 1:1 speed networking with colleagues, chat in groups in the lounges and visit the Exhibition booths. As usual, I found the conference inspiring and motivational and was impressed by the interactive experience of the Airmeet platform. As a member of the NCH, I am required to attend ongoing CPD events and this was an excellent way to keep my professional knowledge up to date and to learn new things. If you would like to find out more about the NCH conference, please get in touch with me.

Covid-19 update
In many ways I can't quite believe how long ago it was that the first Covid-19 lockdown started back in March 2020. It has been such a challenging experience and I don't think anyone would have been able to imagine what it would be like. However, now in October 2021, after the roll out of the 2 vaccination jabs for most adults, I am pleased to see that younger people are receiving theirs and the programme of booster jabs is underway. If you find vaccinations difficult, but you know that you want to have yours, please contact me on jo.hand@btinternet.com as this is something that hypnotherapy can help with.

Seeing clients face to face again
After working with hypnotherapy clients online via Zoom during the Covid-19 pandemic, I am delighted to report that I recently started to see clients face to face again at Evesham Natural Health Centre. I am taking a number of precautions to ensure the safety of my clients and myself and I ask people to sign a Covid-19 client consent form, before we start the session.
I plan to continue seeing clients online via Zoom, if that is the option they prefer.

Are you worth it?
You may have been experiencing some physical or mental health challenges recently. Have you noticed how easy it is to become distracted by all the tasks on your "to-do" list, or by constantly having to do things for other people, so that you never quite manage to get around to prioritising your own health and wellbeing?
If you recognise this situation, then hypnotherapy may be just what you need. It can give you a chance to focus on you, to identify the change that you want to achieve in your life and to work with a hypnotherapist who will help you to move towards achieving your desired outcome. Often clients find that they already have many of the resources that they need, but working with a supportive and objective person, who isn't involved in the situation directly, can give you a fresh way of looking at things and help to increase your confidence or your self-esteem.
If you would like to book a hypnotherapy appointment, get in touch with me now at jo.hand@btinternet.com

I would like to share 2 sayings which can help us to consider the bigger picture, when we feel a little stuck sometimes in life.
The first is anonymous and says "Change how you feel by changing the way that you think about yourself."
The second by Mahatma Gandhi is "The future depends on what we do in the present."

Fears and phobias
Fear is a natural emotion that protects people from harm when they face real and imminent danger. This is often known as the fight or flight response.
A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal. It is an irrational fear that makes it harder for people to deal with and they may end up organising their whole life around avoiding the thing that is causing them anxiety.
A hypnotherapist can help you to understand your phobia and resolve it in just a few sessions. It is helpful to try to identify the original cause - it may be a learned behaviour that you picked up from a parent such as a fear of spiders, or perhaps you had a traumatic experience as a child such as a turbulent flight or you were bitten by a dog.
Hypnotherapy can help, because the subconscious is able to process information more effectively without the interference of the conscious critical mind and the emotional memories. You can also learn to improve you ability to stay calm when confronted with a specific trigger.
I have seen clients who have experienced a range of fears, such as dental treatment, dogs, needles, spiders, heights and going outside. I have found that some clients have lived with a phobia for a long time but are finally motivated to get help, in order to avoid passing the phobia on to their own children. If you would like to find out more about how I can help you, please contact jo.hand@btinternet.com

The same sentiment is reflected in two other anonymous sayings, which are "You do not find the happy life - you make it" and " Everything you need is within you."

Inspirational sayings
Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of the UK during the Second World War from 1940-1945 and again from 1951-1955. He once said that "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference."
John Kabat-Zinn who brought Mindfulness to the western world, said "You can't stop the waves but you can learn to surf." He meant by this, that our job in recovery is to learn to surf the waves of our emotions, so we can stay afloat and enjoy life. If we manage our thoughts and feel our feelings, we are able to ride the waves with ease.
I believe it is not what happens to us in life that defines us, but how we react and our attitude. Hypnotherapy can help clients to make positive and helpful changes to the way that they think, feel and behave.

Looking forward
As we approach the end of February 2021, there are positive signs that real progress is being made in treating and managing the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK. The combination of the third lockdown and the roll out of the vaccination programme does seem to be turning the tide. The numbers of people in hospital with Covid-19 and dying from the virus are at last reducing, although we still have a long way to go. To date, there have been almost 18 million vaccinations in the UK - using mainly the AstraZeneca or the Pfizer-Biontech vaccines. The government has committed to offer a jab to the 32 million people in the 9 priority groups by 15th April and to all adults by 31st July.
This positive progress has allowed the government to announce a four stage plan this week, outlining how we will move towards the time when we can end all of the restrictions - hopefully by the end of June 2021. This is dependent of course, on the statistics and the science showing that this is safe and on all of us continuing to comply with the restrictions.
While this is positive news, the challenges of the last 12 months have resulted in many people in the UK dealing with physical and mental health challenges. Many families have suffered bereavements, people have lost their jobs, businesses have struggled and people have not been able to see friends and relatives face to face for a long time. For many people, the prospect of normal life returning by this summer is great, but some people of all ages, may also be feeling a little anxious or nervous about this and will prefer to take things more slowly, step by step.
Whatever your own thoughts and feelings are, it is ok to have these thoughts and feelings and you are not alone. If you would find it useful to talk, find someone you can trust - a friend, family member, GP, hypnotherapist or a counsellor. Don't forget too that there are many websites and apps available now, where you will find lots of useful ideas, facts and resources that can help you. Together we can achieve much more than any one of us can do on our own, as we continue to look forward.

The power of imagination
I have quoted Richard Bandler before. He is an American author and trainer in the field of self-help, best known as the co-creator of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a methodology to understand and change human behaviour patterns. Today I would like to share one of his quotes which says "Since most problems are created by our imagination and are thus imaginary, all we need are imaginary solutions".
Of course Bandler is not implying by this that major challenges in life don't exist. What he means is that our mindset and our imagination can sometimes work against us, but used correctly they can also be very useful tools. Hypnotherapy is beneficial as it helps you to examine your mindset and the impact it has on your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
One of my favourite definitions of hypnosis is that "Hypnosis is a natural state of heightened awareness, frequently associated with relaxation, where you are able if you wish, to open yourself to suggestions and where you can make use of your imagination to help you to effect positive changes in your life".

Time to Talk Day 4th February 2021
Meanwhile, on the same date, Time to Talk Day reminds us that open conversations about mental health are more important than ever. The aim is to encourage people to take the opportunity to talk, to listen and to change lives. This year's theme is "The power of small", meaning that a small conversation about mental health has the power to make a big difference. The day is organised by Time to Change - a growing social movement which is working to change the way we think and act about mental health problems. Statistics show that 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year and this has not been helped by the current Covid-19 pandemic. Time to Change believes that no one should have to fear being treated differently because of a mental health problem and they focus on challenging stigma and discrimination in society.
There are many organisations and resources available which can provide support, information and advice for people of all ages with mental health issues. To find out more, click on the links below:
Time to Talk Day

Following Joe Biden's recent inauguration as President of the USA, I would like to share 2 quotes with you which were made by a previous President. It was Bill Clinton who said "If you live long enough, you'll make mistakes. But if you learn from them, you'll be a better person". He also said "Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, but stigma and bias shame us all".

Pain or positivity
2020 has been a strange and challenging year for people all around the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We have had to get used to lockdowns, social distancing, wearing face coverings, working from home, redundancies, bereavement, delays to routine health treatments and not being able to hug our nearest and dearest whenever we wanted to. Despite all of this, it is amazing how resilient human beings can be to pain - whether that pain is experienced in terms of our physical or our mental health.
Some people have welcomed a slight slowing down in the pace of their lives and have been able to get things done this year that they had been meaning to do for a long time. Others have taken up new hobbies and interests, such as walking in nature, reading, baking, being creative and learning new skills to help them to communicate online with friends, family, colleagues and customers. For many people it has been a difficult, sad or traumatic year and dealing with so-called normal life events, on top of the pandemic has been very challenging. At the same time however, there have been many positive examples of people helping their neighbours, friends and family members with routine tasks and checking in on them to make sure that they are doing ok. Whatever your own experiences in 2020 have been, Covid-19 has helped people to gain a new perspective on life, as we have learned just how important it is to be patient and to show loving kindness, both to ourselves and to others.
As we approach Christmas and the New Year, the days will soon start to get longer again, the roll out of the vaccination programme against Covid-19 has started and hopefully 2021 will be a better year for everyone. It is useful to remember that everything changes in life and that things always move on. In order to deal with our pain, it helps to understand what we can and cannot influence, to find someone we can talk to and to focus on finding joy, optimism and positivity in our lives wherever we can.

Action for Happiness
If you have not seen it before, you may like to look at the Action for Happiness website at https://www.actionforhappiness.org/ where you will find lots of useful ideas. It was there that I first heard about the book "10 keys to happier living" written by Vanessa King which I read recently. In addition, Action for Happiness organise regular webinars such as the one I attended last week. Jon Kabat-Zinn who was responsible for bringing the idea of mindfulness from the East (from the Buddhist tradition) to the Western world was a fascinating and interesting speaker.

I would like to share 2 quotations with you this time by Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) who was a Mexican artist. She said "At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can". I also like a saying by Timber Hawkeye who is the author of a book called "Buddhist Boot Camp". He said "You can't calm the storm, so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself - the storm will pass".

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it can be useful to talk to your GP or a friend about your feelings. Talking therapies, light therapy and increasing your levels of vitamins including omega 3, omega 6 and vitamin D are all recommended. This kind of depression is often a symptom of unhelpful thinking habits that lead to excessive worrying and rumination. In turn, these high levels of anxiety can lead to physical and mental exhaustion.
Hypnotherapy helps to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety by allowing your brain to work more efficiently and find ways to deal with problems more effectively. You can learn to reframe your negative thoughts or feelings and see things in a different perspective. Hypnotherapy encourages a more positive mindset, helps you to uncover any other underlying problems and find an approach that works for you.

Continuing Professional Development
I am a passionate believer in CPD in any profession, as I believe it helps you to refresh your existing skills and knowledge as well as keep up to date with new developments. Before I started my business "Jo Hand - Hypnotherapy & Coaching", I did my original hypnotherapy training at Central England College where I achieved a Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy. Since then, I have continued to learn through experience and by networking regularly with other professionals at conferences, workshops, webinars, peer group meetings, supervision sessions, reading journals and books and in my role as a Director on the Board of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH). In 2020 many of these meetings moved online via Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic and indeed I have been able to continue to see clients using Zoom. Earlier this year, I decided to undertake a further qualification, the NCH Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD) which is accredited externally by the NCFE. In September 2020 I was delighted to learn that I had successfully achieved my HPD qualification.

Mindfulness
The roots of mindfulness can be traced back to early meditation practices in Buddhism, Hinduism and Yoga. In the late 1970s it was brought from the East to the West by Jon Kabat-Zinn, a US doctor who saw mindfulness as a method of stress reduction and he developed an 8 week-program called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). He defined mindfulness as an awareness that arises through "paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally."
Today, mindfulness is practised in several different ways by individuals and by groups, to maintain a moment by moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, body sensations and the surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. When people practise mindfulness, their thoughts tune into what they're sensing in the present moment, rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. Mindfulness is about a state of "being" rather than "doing" and it is "in the now" or the present moment. It helps you to notice what is happening in your mind and provides techniques to help you to manage your thoughts and see what is going on more clearly. It is a great way of grounding yourself and losing some of the automatic assumptions and judgements that we sometimes make, often due to "attention overload" in today's busy life.
There are 3 "aspects" of mindfulness which are intention, attention and attitude.
There are 9 "attitudes" of mindfulness which are
1. Beginner's mind
2. Non-judging
3. Acceptance
4. Letting go
5. Trust
6. Patience
7. Non-striving
8. Gratitude
9. Generosity
There are some similarities between mindfulness and hypnotherapy, in the sense that they both use imagery and metaphors. While MBSR can help with issues such as stress, anxiety and pain, Kabat-Zinn also developed a second program of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) to work with depression. Like Cognitive Behavioural hypnotherapy, MBCT can highlight people's unhelpful automatic responses and help them to think more logically.
I am not a trained mindfulness teacher, but when I discuss stress and anxiety with my clients and we explore activities that might help them to relax, to feel calmer and happier, mindfulness is one of the ideas that often comes up as a possible task for them to practise in between hypnotherapy sessions. On a personal note, I enjoy mindfulness sessions and I have found them to be beneficial.

Loneliness
Whatever your experience of the COVID-19 lockdown has been, you are likely to have felt a mixture of emotions at different times. One of those emotions may have been loneliness and in August 2018, Stan Popovich wrote an interesting article in "Happiful" magazine. Stan said that at some time in our lives, we will all feel lonely. He suggested a list of 6 tips to help you to overcome the fear of being alone.
1. Find an activity where you can meet people. Doing something you enjoy will make you happy and you will be more likely to make friends.
2. Spending time with an animal or a pet will make you feel better.
3. Helping other people can give you a sense of pride and achievement and can also lead you to making new friends.
4. Be constructive with your time and create some structure in your day. Sitting around doing nothing will not change things. Go one day at a time but stay committed and don't give up.
5. Remember that things can change and nothing stays the same forever. You never know when the help and answers you are looking for will come to you.
6. Realise that you are not alone. Everyone experiences loneliness at some time in their life. It is normal. Remember to focus on your life and don't compare yourself to others.
If you feel lonely, or you are dealing with a difficult issue in your life, it can often help to find someone else who you can talk to about it.

NHS Top 5 Tips for maintaining mental wellbeing during the Coronavirus outbreak
Well here we are in week 6 of lockdown and who would have been able to envisage this situation a year ago? We are certainly living in challenging times. According to the NHS, there are a number of things that we can all do to maintain our mental wellbeing at this time.
1) Talk about your worries: it is normal to feel worried, scared or helpless about the current situation. Maintain contact with friends and family via phone and video calls to share how you are feeling.
2) Keep a regular routine and set goals: you may need to set a new routine for now. Try writing a plan for your day with the things you can still do at home, like watching a film, reading a book or completing a puzzle. Setting goals and achieving them gives a sense of control and purpose. Maintaining good-quality sleep makes a big difference to how you feel mentally and physically too.
3) Manage your media and information intake: if 24-hour news and constant social media updates are making you worried, try to limit the time you spend watching, reading, or listening to coverage to once or twice a day.
4) Do things you enjoy and try something new: focusing on your favourite hobby, learning something new, or simply taking time to relax indoors should give you some relief from anxious thoughts and feelings.
5) Look after your body: Our physical health has a big impact on how we feel. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, drink enough water and exercise regularly. You can leave your house, alone or with members of your household, for one form of exercise a day – like a walk, run or bike ride. But make you keep a safe two-metre distance from others.

The importance of sleep
As human beings of any age, we all need to achieve good sleep. If we don't sleep well or for long enough, it can have a detrimental impact on our quality of life, performance, relationships, emotional well-being and our health.
If you are having problems falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting enough quality sleep, it is vital to take this seriously, to identify what your sleep issues are all about and take appropriate action to improve things.
Modern day life has become very hectic and operates 24/7. Many people report feeling stressed by work or by studying, or perhaps by their relationships and because TV, emails, the internet and social media are constant, it can be difficult to switch off and relax enough to get a good, refreshing night's sleep. Increasingly people are working shift patterns which may be different from other members of their family, so their body clocks, meal times and sleep patterns can become affected. As a result, many people find that when they finally do get to bed, their minds are still far too busy and they become frustrated and unable to sleep.
A hypnotherapist can work with you to help you to understand what is going on in your life which is causing you problems with sleep. You will learn about actions you could take and routines you could change in your life, in order to get a good quality sleep on a regular basis.

My first quote today is from AA Milne. Christopher Robin says to Winnie the Pooh "Promise me you'll always remember: you're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think and loved more than you know". Perhaps this is useful advice for all of us to think about at certain moments in our lives?
Another anonymous saying that can be used to motivate ourselves or someone else in a time of challenge is
"Forget all the reasons it won’t work and believe the one reason that it will".

Domestic Abuse
Earlier this month, I attended a training day on "Understanding and Responding to Domestic Abuse". The Home Office definition of Domestic Abuse is any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. This can encompass but is not limited to the following types of abuse:
In the UK, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 8 men experience Domestic Abuse. There are three important steps to take if you are being abused or threatened by your partner, ex-partner or someone else close to you:
1. recognise it is happening
2. accept you are not to blame
3. seek help and support

The impact of stress on business
One of the professional organisations that I belong to is the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council. In a recent edition of the CNHC Holistic Therapist Magazine, there is an excellent article about the impact of stress and lifestyle diseases on UK businesses. In 2018 there was a £61 billion pound loss, as a result of issues such as depression, poor lifestyle choices and stress. Employers lose on average, 35.6 working days per employee per year due to health-related absence and presenteeism, the latter being calculated as reduced performance due to stress and lifestyle diseases.
Many companies now provide support to their staff through health and well-being programmes and this has led to a 30-40% reduction in productivity loss compared with those without this kind of support. Mental health in particular is a key issue which often stems specifically from workplace stress. If you are interested in developing a support programme for your workforce and would like to find out how I could help you, please email me at jo.hand@binternet.com

Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) was a German born French theologian, organist, humanitarian, philosopher and physician. He once said "Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful".
Another anonymous saying that is worth considering is "A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it isn't open. It's not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It's the one that is most adaptable to change".
