Stress management
You may have heard of the "fight or flight" (or freeze) response to feelings of stress. At times, a small amount of short-term stress can be positive, as it can help to give us motivation or focus. However, prolonged, negative stress which is not recognised, or addressed, can be harmful to our physical and mental health.
One definition of stress says "Someone is stressed when they believe that their ability to deal with stress doesn't match with the demands being put upon them".
We are all different and what one person finds stressful, another person can deal with calmly. So it is often about an individual's own interpretation of a situation and their response to it. The way that we react can be quite complex and affected by a number of different things.
The NHS website has some useful information about stress at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/understanding-stress/
If you would like help to deal with your own feelings of stress, please get in touch to make an appointment with me.
Alternatively, if you are an employer and would like to provide support to your employees around the management of stress and change in the workplace, or simply help them to improve their health and well-being, I can help.

10 Top Tips To Becoming The Person You Could Be
I wonder if any of the following tips mean anything to you? If you would like help to deal with any of these issues in your life, don't hesitate to get in touch with me to arrange an appointment.
1. Make yourself happy & then make other people happy. Put yourself first.
2. Stop thinking about how other people see you. Other people are too busy thinking about what you think of them to think about you.
3. You’re in a career you don’t like. Change it!
4. You try to do everything yourself. Don’t. Outsource as much as you can and free up time to do things you really like.
5. Motivation comes from within. Find a goal that really excites you then lack of motivation shouldn’t be a problem.
6. On average we have five people we spend most of our time with. Choose them wisely because the wrong people will just end up putting you down.
7. Set goals. It’s very hard to wake up feeling great if you don’t have any plans.
8. Take responsibility. Blaming circumstances and other people for where you are in life doesn’t improve things. You can’t change unless you do.
9. Stick to the present day. There is nothing you can do to change the past so don’t waste energy dwelling on it. And don’t go too far into the future - focus on today.
10. Stop being harsh with yourself. Stop comparing yourself to other people. You don’t realise how amazing you already are and how much impact you can make in the world.

What do you feel about rain?
As I write this update, autumn has arrived and it is currently raining outside. I am mindful however that there are 2 ways of thinking about rain. Some people might complain about how cold and damp it is and say that the rain stops them from doing what they want to do in life, while others might remark that rain is good for the garden. I prefer the second way of looking at it and I recognise the truth behind the anonymous saying "Without rain nothing grows, learn to embrace the storm of your life".

Richard Bandler
Richard Wayne Bandler (born February 24, 1950) is an American author and trainer in the field of self-help. He is best known as the co-creator (with John Grinder) of Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), a methodology to understand and change human behaviour patterns. I have mentioned Richard Bandler and NLP in these updates before. Today I would like to share 2 more of his sayings:
The greatest personal limitation is to be found, not in the things you want to do and can't, but in the things you've never considered doing.
For all sorts of reasons, we can get stuck in the routine of daily life, so that things seem to tick along on automatic pilot for a while and we simply react to things that happen, without actively considering the bigger picture or thinking outside of the box. It sometimes takes something to happen in our lives, such as a serious health scare for example, to jolt us into a new way of thinking. Coming to notice what is actually going on and deciding if this is the direction that we want to be going in, can be an important step. Writing our thoughts down, or talking to someone else, a family member, a GP, a hypnotherapist or a life coach, can help us to focus on what we do and don’t want at a particular point in our lives. Once we know where we are now and where we want to get to, it becomes much easier to decide how to get there. Making such a change to achieve a desired outcome, can allow us to do things and achieve things that we never believed possible and can give us a renewed sense of purpose and achievement.
Sometimes people say "One day you are going to look back at this and laugh." My question is "Why wait?"
When I was young, people used to say that time goes more quickly as you get older and I would smile, but as the years have passed, it feels to me now as if this is really true. Perhaps this is a helpful reminder to stop putting things off and to start to take action today, if there is something that we want to change in our lives. This quote also makes me realise that a sense of humour, being able to laugh with others and at ourselves even, is an important life skill, which helps us to keep things in perspective.

Inspirational sayings
Edward De Bono (born 19 May 1933) is a Maltese physician, psychologist, author, inventor and consultant. He originated the term lateral thinking, wrote the book “Six Thinking Hats” and is a proponent of the teaching of thinking as a subject in schools.
Two of his quotations which I set out below, seem to be relevant to the practice of hypnotherapy:
“You can analyse the past, but you have to design the future” and
“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way”.

NCH Annual Conference 2019
The NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy) conference took place at the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) in London on 22nd June 2019 and as usual, I learned a lot, found it interesting and inspiring and enjoyed the chance to network with other therapists and the speakers. For details of the speakers and topics, see my May update. At lunchtime, I attended the NCH AGM and I was elected as the Research Director, having been co-opted to this post in October 2018. I am enjoying this role and recently carried out a Research Questionnaire which was sent to all NCH members. I am currently looking through the results, which we will discuss at the next Board meeting and will feed back to NCH members.

Mental Health Awareness Week: 13th-19th May 2019
The theme of Mental Health Awareness Week this year is Body Image - how we feel and think about our bodies. According to the Mental Health Foundation, "Last year we found that 30% of all adults have felt so stressed by body image and appearance that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope. That's almost 1 in every 3 people".
Mental health problems can affect anyone at any time and for many different reasons. Why not take a look at the Mental Health Foundation website at https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/ where you will find lots of helpful resources and information. Mental health is everyone's business.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a powerful psychotherapy method which comes within the category of “pattern interrupt” techniques. It is used to diminish negative feelings associated with memories of traumatic events. It was originally developed by Francine Shapiro and is used to treat the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and phobias. EMDR is divided into eight phases and makes use of bilateral stimulation. EMDR can be integrated into treatment plans of different therapeutic approaches including hypnotherapy. A new you
Welcome to the start of a new year and a chance to focus on you. How often do you put your own thoughts and feelings first and consider finding help to make a positive change in your life? Instead we often make excuses - we are too busy at work, or supporting others, or perhaps we think that our needs are just not as important as other people’s. Sometimes we don’t know how to start making this kind of a change, or we assume that it is too difficult to tackle a challenging issue.
Have you noticed that when someone has a problem with their physical health such as a broken leg or their eyesight is starting to get worse, they don’t think twice about making an appointment with their GP, or a hospital consultant or an optician. It is an interesting thing however, that we can be a bit more reluctant to ask for help when it is a mental health issue.
If you recognise that you are feeling anxious, having panic attacks or need help to improve your self-esteem, confidence or to deal with a phobia, it doesn’t matter what other people might think. It matters that you put yourself first and seek support with your issue. Hypnotherapy, along with other talking therapies can help you to make that change and to achieve your desired outcome in life and you deserve it!

Visualise the positive
When we feel stressed about something, we tend to picture the worst-case scenario which can make our negative feelings worse. Our brain’s survival system is pre-disposed to think negatively and our “fight or flight” reaction results in the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. The constant release of stress hormones can end up causing stomach and other problems. To counter this, if we visualise a positive outcome, we can actually change the chemical response. We begin to release dopamine a hormone associated with happiness and serotonin which regulates our mood. As a result of doing this, when we do hit a moment of stress, we find we are in a better place to cope with it.

Improve your self-awareness and take control of your life
Carl Gustav Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. Jung once said “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate”.
Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool which can help you to better understand what is happening in your life. Often the reason why we think, feel and behave in a certain way can be buried deep in our subconscious. The sessions help you to improve your self-awareness, to let go of any unhelpful thoughts or emotions from the past and to achieve the positive outcome that you desire in your life.

Hypnotherapy for weight management
Did you ever feel good in the past when you went on a crash diet and lost some weight, only to end up feeling frustrated and disappointed when you put it all back on again?
Hypnotherapy enables you to break this cycle of yo-yo dieting. It can be helpful to consider the triggers in your life that cause you to eat unhealthy foods, or maybe your portions are too large or perhaps you are drinking a bit too much. Are you eating because you are bored or stressed, or do you feel that you deserve a treat as a reward for something? What are your objectives in terms of weight management and are they realistic?
The sessions will help you to re-educate yourself about healthy eating options. By learning to avoid the highs and lows of a short-term glucose hit and aiming instead for a balanced, healthy eating approach, you can feel much better in the long term. By combining a more informed healthy eating approach with the relaxation benefit of hypnosis and identifying an exercise routine that works for you, you are more likely to achieve your weight management objectives. In turn, your sense of achievement will make it so much easier to maintain this new healthier you. If you would like to find out more, or book your first session with me please get in touch at jo.hand@btinternet.com

Alcohol awareness week 19th - 25th November 2018
Alcohol Concern’s campaign this year is all about change. For more information see https://www.alcoholconcern.org.uk/alcohol-awareness-week
Millions of people choose to drink more healthily or stop drinking each year, and their lives and the lives of those around them change as a result. There’s great practice happening in the treatment sector across the country. And organisations and charities are campaigning for system-wide change so fewer people are harmed by alcohol.
As the campaign says, Change is necessary, Change is possible and Change is happening. So, if you think you need help yourself or for someone you love, go ahead and make a positive change to your life.

Stoptober
Did you know that Stoptober is the annual Public Health England campaign encouraging smokers to quit for the month of October? Stoptober has driven over 1 million quit attempts to date and is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country. It is based on research that shows that if someone can stop smoking for 28-days, they are five times more likely to stay smoke free for good. This year, Stoptober will encourage smokers to find the most suitable support for them rather than trying to quit 'cold turkey'.
You might like to try using hypnotherapy to help you to give up smoking and if this interests you, I recommend that you look for a practitioner like me, who is registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).
Public Health England has a range of materials and support available for those trying to quit, which you can find online here.

Inspirational saying
Oscar Wilde an Irish poet and playwright said “When it rains look for rainbows, when it’s dark look for stars”. I like this quotation as it reminds me that there is often more than one way to think about things. It can be helpful sometimes to take a step back and to think about an issue from a different angle. This in turn can help to change the way that we feel and our emotions in a positive way.
Oscar Wilde an Irish poet and playwright said “When it rains look for rainbows, when it’s dark look for stars”. This in turn can help to change the way that we feel and our emotions in a positive way.

Happiful magazine
In the September 2018 edition of Happiful, I love the 8 x message cards including the one that says “Actually, you can”. The idea is that you remove the cards from the magazine and you can share one of them with someone of your choice. You can send a photo of one of the cards by email or social media, put it in the post, pin it to a noticeboard or or even frame one of these positive messages. Receiving one of these cards can make all the difference and lift someone’s mood if they are feeling a bit low.
I enjoy reading Happiful magazine which is published monthly and includes articles and stories to dispel mental health myths and remind readers that they are not alone.
This month's edition also has an interesting and easy to read article by Lorraine McReight which explains what really goes on in the hypnotherapy room.
This is something that I like to do myself as part of my free, introduction session that I provide for new clients. I am keen to help clients to avoid any misconceptions about hypnotherapy and hypnosis, it reassures them they know broadly what to expect and it helps to build a good, working relationship between us.

Smoking cessation
I recently received a testimonial from a client after he came to see me to stop smoking. He wrote
Just a quick update to let you know that since my smoking cessation session on 20 June I have not had a cigarette. I'm not saying I have found it easy but based on my past experiences trying to quit, I have found that my will power appears to be much stronger and as such much easier to say no when tempted.
Thank you again for assisting me with what is a life changing event.

As Henry Ford once said "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right". In my experience, if someone wants to make a change in their life and has the motivation to do so, hypnotherapy can be a positive and powerful tool to help them to make this change successfully.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. There are many sayings attributed to the Dalai Lama about life and success. Two of his sayings that can help you to consider things in a different way are:
“Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions”
“When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new”.

Worry v Concern
A hypnotherapist colleague once shared her thoughts with me about the difference between worry and concern. These ideas have stayed with me over the years and I sometimes discuss them with my clients.
We often hear people say that they are “worried” about something, but when you ask yourself what does worrying actually achieve, the answer is usually nothing. In fact, worrying about a situation will often end up making us feel even worse. The word “worry” can be unhelpful, reactive and has negative connotations.
On the other hand, if you say that you are “concerned” about something, this feels more proactive and positive and implies that you can do something practical to try to influence the outcome. There may even be times when you are “concerned” about something and it still doesn’t turn out the way that you wanted it to, but in these cases, you would certainly never have achieved it by worrying.
When we feel “concerned” about something, it can be empowering to get these thoughts and feelings out of our head, either by talking to someone or perhaps by writing them down on a piece of paper. By choosing to take some positive action in this way, we are able to consider what we are concerned about in a more objective way, to break any negative patterns and to start to move towards finding a positive solution. This can also help us to feel more in control. At the same time, deliberately doing more of the things that we know help us to relax will enable us to live a calmer and happier life.

I have quoted the Vietnamese, Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh before. He said “It's very important that we re-learn the art of resting and relaxing. Not only does it help prevent the onset of many illnesses that develop through chronic tension and worrying; it allows us to clear our minds, focus, and find creative solutions to problems”.

Keep calm and dance in the rain
There is a quote by Vivian Greene that says “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…. It’s about learning to dance in the rain”.
This saying reminds me that sometimes we can mistakenly put things on hold, in the expectation that eventually our life will be perfect. However, one of the certainties of life is change and it is likely that we will continue to face challenges at various times in the future. One way to think about this is to try to keep things in perspective, take things one step at a time and work on improving our resilience. When we do this, it becomes easier to deal with things. We learn to recognise what is not important and what we can’t control and once we let these things go, we are able to focus instead on taking some action on the things that we can influence. In turn, this allows us to continue to enjoy and appreciate the positive aspects of our life every day.

Why grief is not something you have to “get over”
I recently watched an excellent short video by the BBC which has this title and was created on 3rd March 2018. I recommend this video if you, or someone you know has suffered a bereavement.
As the video points out, grief is the one thing that we will all experience at some time in life and yet we don’t always know how best to help ourselves or others to deal with grief. Although we are likely to go through a wide range of emotions and feelings, it helps to understand that grief is a perfectly normal process and that death is a part of life.
There are said to be 5 stages to grief which are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance, but just as we are all different, so our experience of these 5 stages will be different and individual to each one of us. There is not a steady progression from one stage into the next over a set number of weeks and no “one size fits all”.
The lasting impression that this video gave me is the importance of trying to understand what is happening and of allowing it to happen. If you feel sad, then let yourself feel sad and don’t bottle it up. It can help some people to read practical, self-help books and fiction books about people who have been through similar experiences. Others will prefer to find someone to talk to – maybe your GP, your friends, your parents, a bereavement counsellor or a hypnotherapist, as talking can often help you to make sense of and deal with your thoughts and feelings.
The video explains why you will never “get over” these feelings of grief, but you do learn to cope with them and over time, new parts of your life can develop and grow, alongside your memories of the person who has died.

Mindfulness meditation
I recently attended an excellent Mindfulness meditation day in the lovely Cotswold village of Stanton. I wasn’t sure of exactly what to expect beforehand, but it was a relaxing and enjoyable day and it can help with your general health and well-being.
One definition of mindfulness is “becoming aware of the present moment”. It helps people to become more aware of where their thoughts are taking them. It moves us from a “doing” mode to a “being” mode which is “in the now”.
It was John Kabat-Zinn who first brought mindfulness to the west and he wrote a book called “Full catastrophe living”. John Kabat-Zinn ran a stress reduction clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the USA in the 1970s. His practice of yoga and studies with Buddhist teachers influenced his approach.
Mark Williams has also written 2 books called “Mindfulness: a practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world” and “Mindfulness for health: a practical guide to relieving pain, reducing stress and restoring well-being.”

Fear of heights and fear of flying
When I work with the clients who come to see me with a fear of heights, they often end up recognising that it is not so much of a fear of heights, as a fear of falling. In hypnosis, I help them to lose the irrational belief of the likelihood of falling and to recognise that in everyday life they can learn to feel calm, confident and safe.
Clients with a fear of flying may, or may not have a fear of heights. Some of these clients are concerned with the negative terminology that airlines use, quite unintentionally. Some are anxious when the plane is taking off or landing, or when the landing gear is going up and the flaps on the wings are moving, or when the pilot says that there may be some turbulence. I work with my clients, both in hypnosis with their subconscious mind, and out of hypnosis with their conscious mind, to help them to understand the normal processes of flying and what to expect. As a result, they are more able to relax and to actually enjoy the flight, as well as the holiday or the business meeting at the other end!

Coping with stress at work
Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, tired and stressed at work sometimes? Do you find it hard to switch off and stop thinking about work, even during your time off and when you are on holiday? Quite often, we end up believing that there is nothing we can do about this and that being stressed simply comes with the territory, and is something that we have to accept as the price of having a good job and being successful.
It is useful to explore the issues a bit more, and to really understand the physiology and psychology of the stress response on our bodies and minds. There are a number of physical, mental and behavioural symptoms that we can experience as a result of stress, some of which can have serious implications if we ignore them.
Here are some tips that can help you to regain control and to break the unhelpful pattern that can cause burn-out and depression:
Remember, that by understanding the issues, you can take steps to remove the causes of stress, or at least to reduce the impact of it, wherever possible.

Here are some tips that can help you to regain control and to break the unhelpful pattern that can cause burn-out and depression:
- Take a few deep breaths and notice how your breathing slows down a little
- Eat fresh, whole foods and avoid processed foods and take-away food
- Drink more water
- Try to do some regular exercise. It doesn’t have to be going to the gym, it could be walking, swimming, cycling or gardening, just something that works for you and that you enjoy doing.
- Review your sleep routine and identify ways you can improve this, such as banning your mobile phone from the bedroom and stopping using it at least an hour before you go to bed. A good night’s sleep can help us to deal with things at work the next day in a much calmer and more efficient way.
- Identify the activities and techniques that help you to relax and that you can easily become absorbed in, and build these things into your normal routine. This can be anything from going to the cinema, seeing family and friends, enjoying a hobby, practising meditation or learning to play a musical instrument.
- At the end of each day why make a note of your EGS? Record somewhere - E - what did enjoy about today? G – what are you grateful for? S – what are you satisfied with? These can be really simple things, but focusing on them can help you to break any negative thinking patterns left over from the working day.
- Clear communication at work is essential. Stay calm and polite, but be honest with your colleagues or your boss about what you can do and learn to say “no” when necessary.
- Talk to a close friend
- Keep things in perspective and try to see the bigger picture
Remember, that by understanding the issues, you can take steps to remove the causes of stress, or at least to reduce the impact of it, wherever possible.

Men and hypnotherapy
There are a range of anxieties, stresses and phobias that men face in life these days. These can include things like their physical health, sleep problems, exercise and sport, relationships, work challenges and professional development, commitments with the family and the home, social media and addictions. Traditionally the expectation was that they should just be able to “get on and deal with things”. After all, their fathers had coped and didn’t need to deal with their emotions, thoughts and feelings or see a therapist, did they?
Thankfully this view has changed considerably and plenty of men and boys do see a hypnotherapist for help when they want to make a positive change to a particular issue in their life. The confidential nature of the sessions is supportive and reassuring. Hypnotherapy can help you to understand why you are feeling as you are, and talking with an objective therapist who is not personally involved in the situation can really help. By taking a logical, solution focused approach you can quickly find a way to deal with the issue that is concerning you.
In the last few years I have seen a number of men and boys of varying ages as clients. By the end of our sessions, many of my clients are amazed and delighted about how different they now feel, from the way they felt at the first session. Plus, they have gained the resources, skills and insight to help themselves should any other issues occur in the future.

Richard Bandler quotation
Richard Bandler, the co-developer of NLP, also known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming, conducts workshops and training seminars internationally. He once said “You don’t drive forward by looking in the rear view mirror, so why run your life that way?”
People often worry, either about something that happened in the past which cannot be “un-happened”, or something in the future that may not even happen. It can be much more helpful and a lot less stressful, to live in the present, to take each day as it comes and to appreciate the positive things that you have in your life.

Communication, communication, communication
Have you ever found yourself reacting in a negative way when you are in conversation with someone who you think of as being a “difficult” or “awkward” person? Do you find yourself jumping to conclusions about what they are thinking, without listening to them properly? Do you sometimes go quiet and give up on explaining your point of view to someone, simply because you think “they will never understand or change their ways, so what is the point?”
All of the above situations can happen from time to time, perhaps with colleagues at work, family members or friends, and it can be very draining and frustrating.
There are several reasons why this can happen, but rather than blaming someone else, it is important to start with yourself first. If you can build regular opportunities into your life to relax and stay calm, increase your own self-awareness and understand your preferred way of doing things, this can be a great place to start. Also, try to think carefully about what you DO want rather than what you don’t want.
It’s important to remember that communication is a two-way process. Just because you know what you mean when the words leave your mouth, doesn’t necessarily mean that this is what is understood by the person receiving your communication. It really helps when both people accept responsibility for the quality of the communication, and when they understand what the impact of their behaviour can be on the other person.
If you as an individual (or a team of colleagues) would like some help to deal with issues like these, just contact Jo Hand - Hypnotherapy & Coaching.

Inspirational saying
Maya Angelou, whose most famous book was “I know why the caged bird sings” is credited with a number of interesting quotations. One of them is “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”
This reminds us that the way that we choose to think about something can change the way that we feel about it or respond to it. We can sometimes find a more positive or helpful way of thinking about an issue, which in turn can help to achieve a happier life.

Take a few deep breaths
Have you ever noticed when you feel angry or stressed about something, that it can really help to take a few deep breaths? As you do, you may notice that your breathing starts to slow down a little, with the result that you very quickly start to feel calmer and more relaxed.
The Vietnamese, Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, recognised the power of breath and of simple meditation techniques when he said “Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again.”

April is bowel cancer awareness month
Bowel cancer is very treatable but the earlier it is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. People whose cancer is diagnosed at an early stage have a much higher chance of successful treatment than those whose cancer has become more widespread. If you have any symptoms, don’t be embarrassed and don’t ignore them. Doctors are used to seeing lots of people with bowel problems. For more information, go to https://www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk/

Cancer and hypnotherapy
Patients who receive a diagnosis of cancer of any kind, can benefit from talking therapies, which reinforce the usual medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. For some people this may be counselling, while others have found that hypnotherapy can be useful in several ways. A hypnotherapist can teach a patient self-help techniques to help with pain management, the reduction of fatigue, and with cancer related symptom relief. Hypnosis can help a patient to focus on a positive attitude, relaxation, visualisation, goal setting, exercise and building an emotional support system. The way that we think and our emotional well-being can help us to deal with many aspects of physical illness, which is why the mind-body link is so important.

And finally
Since I started my business, I have seen clients of all ages, and with all kinds of issues including a few which I had not come across previously. In every case, these clients have benefitted in some way from hypnotherapy.
Is there an issue that you feel it is difficult to talk to anyone else about? Is there a topic that you would like to know more about and you wonder if hypnotherapy can help? If so, please feel free to contact me and I promise to get back to you promptly and confidentially.

Connections
When I see a hypnotherapy client for the first time and we are going through the “Client Intake Questionnaire”, I ask the client about themselves, the issue they have come to see me about, and any specific symptoms they have been experiencing. One of the things we go on to consider is when did they first notice the symptom(s), and was there anything else significant going on in their lives at that time.
Any of us can experience a difficult event or situation in life, and for all sorts of reasons, we may not deal with it fully at the time. But if we ignore it, it can lead us to experience negative or unhelpful thoughts, which can create feelings of anxiety or stress. These feelings in turn, can impact on many other areas of our life.
I help my clients to recognise and understand these connections for themselves and sometimes this improved awareness can be beneficial. The client will start to recognise the options they have for dealing with this issue once and for all and to make a positive change in their life.

A name change
The “Society of Stress Managers” which used to trade as the “Society of Stress Therapists” has recently changed its name to the “Association of Hypnotherapy & Stress Management” (AHSM). I am one of the Directors of this organisation and we feel that this change of name will help potential clients and other hypnotherapists to understand better what AHSM can do for them. We are currently developing a new and exciting website for AHSM, so don’t forget to watch this space!

Richard Bandler quotation
Richard Bandler is an American author and trainer in the field of self-help. He is best known as the co-creator of Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), a methodology to understand and change human behaviour patterns. He gave us some great sayings including “The easier you can make it inside your head, the easier it will make things outside your head”.

Interesting sayings
Albert Einstein once said “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value”. I think it can be helpful to consider what success means to us at different times in our lives.
And Chuang Tzu a Chinese philosopher from the 4th century said “Perfect happiness is the absence of striving for happiness”.
